Beer Tasting Night- 25th May

For one night only, or if it goes well, an on-going monthly event is our beer tasting night in conjunction with Hop Stop Beers an independent craft beer shop in the heart of Surrey. Why them? Ruth & Mike (brother & sister-in-law) before opening the shop, travelled the world in search of the best, unique beer from around the world. They love, eat, sleep beer, and have a massive knowledge of everything hoppy.

We approached them to help choose the best beers for James 5-Course menu, working both ways, they choose the beer to match the food and we chose the food to match the beer, so back and forth a few time and we have the perfect pairings.

Course 1

Wye valley asparagus, brown crab, grapefruit foam

Beer: Wild Beer, Somerset Wild 5% (Somerset, UK)

Style: Sour Ale

About: A beer with the acidity levels of a white wine or farmhouse cider, with a depth, complexity and refreshing drinkability to it that makes it a wonderful beer to pair with food.


Course 2

Raw seabass, curry yogurt, broccoli, sherry

Beer: To Ol, Rustique 5.1% (Copenhagen)
Style: Unfiltered Pilsner
About: You don’t want to judge a book by its cover. This pilsner is all about cloudy haziness. Untouched, original, rustique pilsner.


Course 3

Roast sweetbread of veal, BBQ feta, peas, marjoram, Lardo

Beer: Burning Sky, Gaston 6% (Firle near Lewes, UK)
Style: Belgian Pale Ale
About: A deceptively drinkable pale ale in the Belgian tradition. The unique yeast strain is complemented by a mix of old and new world hops to give a spicy orange and mango aroma. Finishes clean.


Course 4

Treacle glazed shin of belted Galloway beef, sand carrot, samphire, star anise

Beer: Buxton, Imperial Black 7.5% (Buxton, UK)
Style: Black IPA
About: Full bodied jet-black ale with a pale-tan head. Abundant fresh hop aromas suggesting zesty citrus pulp and forest fruits.


Course 5

Jamaican ginger and banana Mille fuielle

Beer: St Bernardus Blanche 5.5% (Belgium)
Style: Wit
About: This ale is very pale and quite hazy. In aroma, it has a wheat, apple-like, tartness; herbal-spicy notes with coriander and orangey fruitiness and honey sweetness.
